The Angel's Envy Core Lineup

Three core expressions, each defined by a different finishing cask. All in stock, ships direct.

The Original

Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Bourbon · Finished in Ruby Port Wine Barrels · 43.3% ABV

The expression that changed American bourbon's relationship with cask finishing. Lincoln Henderson's port barrel finish adds a layer of ripe fruit, vanilla sweetness, and silky texture that the base bourbon alone couldn't produce. The result is rich amber color, aromas of dark fruit and toasted oak, and a palate that's unmistakably smooth, never cloying, always balanced. The benchmark post-finish bourbon.

Rye — Rum Casks

Angel's Envy Rye Finished in Rum Casks

Rye Whiskey · Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks · 50% ABV

A bold Kentucky straight rye finished in Caribbean rum casks, an unusual combination that works extraordinarily well. The rye provides structure, spice, and backbone; the rum barrels layer on citrus, caramel candy, tropical sweetness, and a long, warm finish with rum character threading through. One of the most original finished rye whiskeys made anywhere in America, and a must-try for Teeling Small Batch fans.

Full Proof Intensity

Angel's Envy Cask Strength Bourbon

Cask Strength · Annual Release · Port Finish

The flagship expression at full proof, no dilution. Port barrel finishing on a cask-strength bourbon creates something genuinely rare: the richness and fruit character of the standard expression, amplified by higher proof intensity. Dark chocolate, black cherry, smoky oak, and a long, concentrated finish. Released annually in limited quantities. The bottle serious collectors put aside first.

Premium Expressions, Beyond the Core

Extended age statements, unusual cask types, and the most distinctive bottlings in the Angel's Envy range.

10yr Aged

Angel's Envy 10 Year Cask Strength

10yr · Cask Strength · Premium Tier

Ten years of aging followed by port barrel finishing, bottled at cask strength. The decade of oak maturation delivers extraordinary depth, dried fruit, dark chocolate, leather, and complex spice, while the port finish keeps the sweetness and fruit character that define the brand. The most layered and intense Angel's Envy in the lineup. The bottle for enthusiasts who want the full expression of what a decade of patience produces.

Triple Oak

Angel's Envy Triple Oak Finish

Bourbon · Finished in Three Distinct Oak Casks

Three different oak cask types applied sequentially, each adding its own layer of character to the base bourbon. The result is a multi-dimensional expression with complexity that builds gradually across every sip: vanilla and caramel from one wood, dried fruit from another, warm spice from a third. The most structurally complex bourbon in the Angel's Envy standard range.

Madeira Cask

Angel's Envy Madeira Cask Finish

Bourbon · Finished in Madeira Wine Casks

Madeira is one of the world's most complex fortified wines, rich, nutty, and layered with dried fruit, toffee, and oxidative character. Applied as a finishing cask to Kentucky straight bourbon, it delivers a result unlike any other Angel's Envy expression: walnut, dried apricot, caramel, and a distinctive savory-sweet finish. The expression most likely to appeal to fans of sherry-finished Scotch single malts.

Bottled in Bond

Angel's Envy Bottled in Bond Cask Strength

Bottled in Bond · Cask Strength · Strict American Whiskey Law

Bottled in Bond means four years minimum age, single distillery, single distillation season, and exactly 100 proof. Angel's Envy's take on the BiB standard but at cask strength, delivers maximum transparency: you're tasting exactly what the distillery made, nothing added. Clean, honest, structured, and intensely flavorful. For the purist who wants Angel's Envy craft without the finishing flourishes.

The Most Unusual Finishes in the Lineup

Angel's Envy regularly pushes the boundaries of cask finishing into territory that even Scotch distilleries rarely explore. These two expressions are the most unexpected in the range and both deliver something genuinely distinct.

Rye Finished in Ice Cider Casks

A Kentucky straight rye finished in ice cider barrels, a Canadian specialty made from frozen apples. The result is a rye whiskey with genuine orchard character: tart green apple, soft pear, spice, and a crisp, bright finish unlike any other American rye. For adventurous drinkers who want something that can't be predicted.

Shop Ice Cider Rye →

Rye Finished in Añejo Tequila Barrels

A straight rye whiskey finished in barrels that previously held añejo tequila, one of the most unusual finishing choices in American whiskey. The tequila influence adds agave, citrus, light smoke, and an earthy warmth that intertwines with the rye's natural spice. Unexpected. Complex. The bottle for collectors who've tried everything else.

The Cellar Collection, Angel's Envy at Its Most Refined

The Cellar Collection represents Angel's Envy's most carefully selected and finished expressions, premium tier releases built for collectors and serious enthusiasts.

Cellar Collection

Cellar Collection Tawny Port Finish

Cellar Collection · Tawny Port Casks · Premium

Tawny port, aged in small oak casks for extended periods, imparts a nutty, dried fruit character different from standard ruby port. Applied to Angel's Envy's Kentucky bourbon, the tawny finish adds hazelnut, dried orange peel, fig, and a refined, layered complexity. The most Scotch-like expression in the standard Angel's Envy lineup, deeply influenced by the same cask philosophy that defines great Speyside single malts.

The Angel's Envy Story: Lincoln Henderson's Last Great Idea

Lincoln Henderson spent 40 years at Brown-Forman, where he was responsible for creating some of America's most celebrated spirits, including Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack. In 2006, after retiring, he began working on something he'd always wanted to try: finishing Kentucky straight bourbon in non-traditional wine casks. The idea was not new to the Scotch world, cask finishing had been standard practice in Scotland for decades, but it was almost unheard of in American bourbon, which traditionally required new charred oak and nothing else.

Henderson founded Angel's Envy with his son Wes in 2011, just two years before his death in 2013. The flagship port barrel expression he created became an instant phenomenon, a bourbon that borrowed Scotch's most powerful production tool and applied it to American whiskey with remarkable results. Wes Henderson and the team have continued expanding the Angel's Envy range since, developing expressions finished in rum, Madeira, tawny port, tequila, ice cider, and triple oak configurations.

The distillery is located in Louisville's NuLu neighborhood, in a purpose-built facility that opened in 2016. Bacardi acquired Angel's Envy in 2015, providing the resources to scale production while maintaining the founding philosophy: every expression finishes in something interesting, and every finishing decision is made with intention.

3 Angel's Envy Cocktails Worth Making Tonight

The port barrel finish makes Angel's Envy's bourbon one of the most versatile cocktail spirits in the category. These three show it at its best.

Angel's Envy Old Fashioned

2 min · The classic and this bourbon was built for it
  • 2 oz Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon
  • 1 sugar cube (or ½ tsp demerara syrup)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters · 1 dash orange bitters
  • Large ice cube · Orange peel and cherry to garnish

Muddle sugar and bitters in a rocks glass. Add Angel's Envy and a large ice cube, stir until chilled. Express orange peel over the glass. The port barrel finish adds a natural fruit depth to the Old Fashioned that makes the orange bitters redundant in the best possible way, the cocktail becomes more complex with less effort. One of the most naturally suited bourbon-to-cocktail matches in the category.

Port & Storm (Angel's Envy Highball)

2 min · Port finish meets ginger spice
  • 2 oz Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon
  • ½ oz fresh lemon juice
  • Ginger beer to top
  • Tall glass · Ice · Lemon wheel & mint garnish

Build in a tall glass over ice. Add bourbon and lemon juice, top with ginger beer and stir gently. Angel's Envy's port barrel sweetness and the ginger beer's spice create a genuinely elegant highball, richer and more complex than a standard Kentucky Mule, with the lemon keeping it bright. The most refreshing way to enjoy the flagship expression in warm weather.

Rum & Rye Sour

3 min · Tropical, spicy, sophisticated
  • 2 oz Angel's Envy Rum Finished Rye
  • ¾ oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • ½ oz egg white (optional)
  • Ice · Lime wheel garnish

Dry shake (without ice) if using egg white, then shake with ice and strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass. The Rum Finished Rye is naturally suited to a citrus sour, its rum-cask-derived tropical sweetness and the rye's natural spice create a whiskey sour with genuine complexity. The egg white adds a silky texture that turns it from good to genuinely exceptional.

Angel's Envy, Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called Angel's Envy?

In whiskey aging, the "angel's share" refers to the portion of spirit that evaporates from the barrel over time, typically 2–4% per year. Lincoln Henderson named the brand "Angel's Envy" with the belief that the whiskey remaining in the barrel was so exceptional that the angels would be envious of what the drinker gets to experience. The name captures both the aging tradition and the brand's commitment to quality.

What makes Angel's Envy different from other bourbons?

Cask finishing. American bourbon law requires aging in new charred oak barrels but there's no restriction on secondary finishing in other casks. Angel's Envy finishes every expression in a different type of cask (port, rum, Madeira, tawny port, ice cider, tequila, triple oak), a technique borrowed directly from Scotch whisky production. This single philosophy defines the entire brand and distinguishes every expression in the lineup.

Is Angel's Envy good for an Old Fashioned?

Extremely. The port barrel finish adds natural fruit depth and sweetness to the Old Fashioned that normal bourbon achieves only with heavy muddling. The flagship bourbon is one of the most naturally suited expressions for an Old Fashioned in any American whiskey category. Use orange bitters alongside Angostura to amplify the port character.

What is the best Angel's Envy expression?

For the classic experience: Kentucky Straight Bourbon. For maximum intensity: 10yr Cask Strength. For the most unique: Añejo Tequila Rye or Ice Cider Rye. For the exclusive: Stairway to Heaven, LoveScotch's own hand-selected single barrel.

Who founded Angel's Envy?

Lincoln Henderson, the legendary Master Distiller who spent 40 years at Brown-Forman creating Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack, co-founded Angel's Envy with his son Wes in 2011. Lincoln passed away in 2013, two years after launch. Wes continues the brand's founding philosophy of creative, intentional cask finishing from the Louisville distillery.

What is the LoveScotch exclusive Angel's Envy?

Stairway to Heaven is a single barrel Angel's Envy bourbon finished in port casks, hand-selected exclusively for LoveScotch.com. It's not available at any other retailer, shortbread cookies, custard, stewed fruits, caramel, and a leather-and-tobacco finish. The most refined Angel's Envy you can buy, and only available here.

Already Love Angel's Envy's Cask Finishing? Scotch Invented It.

Angel's Envy's entire brand philosophy, finishing bourbon in wine and spirit casks to add complexity, is borrowed directly from Scotch whisky production. Scotland has been doing this for over a century: Macallan in sherry casks, Glenmorangie in wine casks, Laphroaig in quarter casks. If Angel's Envy's cask finishing is what drew you in, Scotch has an entire world of expressions that take this further, age it longer, and apply it with centuries of tradition behind every decision.
