Cachaca
Cachaça is Brazil's most famous and traditional spirit, made from fermented sugarcane juice. Known as the key ingredient in the popular cocktail caipirinha, cachaça has a distinct, robust flavor that sets it apart from other sugarcane-based spirits like rum. It can be enjoyed neat, in cocktails, or aged for a smoother, more complex profile.
There are two main types of cachaça: unaged (branca or prata) and aged (amarela or ouro). Unaged cachaça is clear and has a strong, earthy flavor, while aged cachaça, stored in wooden barrels, offers a smoother taste with hints of vanilla and caramel.
Prominent brands include Ypióca, one of the oldest and most respected, 51, which is widely recognized and popular, and Leblon, a premium brand known internationally. Cachaça's versatility and unique taste make it a cherished element of Brazilian culture and an emerging favorite worldwide.
