Wheated Bourbon
Wheated bourbon is a style of bourbon whiskey where wheat is used as the secondary grain in the mash bill, replacing the more common rye. This gives wheated bourbons a softer, sweeter flavor profile compared to traditional rye-based bourbons. The primary grain in all bourbon must be at least 51% corn, but wheated bourbons have a notable sweetness, often with flavors of caramel, vanilla, honey, and a mellow fruitiness.
Because of the use of wheat, these bourbons tend to have a smoother, less spicy character, making them approachable and ideal for sipping. The aging process in charred oak barrels imparts rich, deep flavors, while the wheat enhances the soft, round mouthfeel. Wheated bourbons are commonly enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails like an Old Fashioned.
Notable wheated bourbons include brands like Maker's Mark and W.L. Weller, both of which have become iconic for their smooth, easy-drinking style. The alcohol content typically ranges from 45% to 50%, depending on the specific expression.
