Vermouth
Vermouth is a fortified wine infused with a blend of botanicals like herbs, spices, roots, and flowers. Originating in 18th-century Italy, it has become essential in cocktails and as a standalone aperitif.
There are two main types: sweet (red) and dry (white) vermouth. Sweet vermouth, associated with Italian origins, offers a rich, slightly sweet taste with hints of vanilla, caramel, and spices. Dry vermouth, linked to French tradition, is lighter, less sweet, and characterized by herbal and floral notes with a crisp finish.
Vermouth plays a vital role in classic cocktails like the Martini and Manhattan, adding depth and complexity. It's also enjoyed alone or with soda as an aperitif, valued for its intricate flavors and ability to whet the appetite. Its versatility and distinct taste make it a cornerstone of both traditional and modern mixology.
