Soju
Soju is a traditional Korean distilled spirit that is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in South Korea and has gained international popularity. It is typically made from rice, but modern variations can also include other grains or starches like barley, wheat, or sweet potatoes. Soju is known for its smooth, slightly sweet taste and relatively low alcohol content, usually ranging from 16% to 25% ABV.
Soju is often consumed neat, in small shot glasses, and is a staple in Korean social gatherings and meals. It pairs well with a variety of Korean dishes, particularly grilled meats and spicy foods. The drink is also frequently used as a base in cocktails, mixed with fruit juices, soda, or even beer in a popular combination known as "soju bomb."
In recent years, flavored soju has become increasingly popular, offering variations like peach, apple, and grapefruit, which appeal to a broader audience. Soju's versatility, affordability, and cultural significance make it a beloved and enduring part of Korean drinking culture.
