Miyagikyo
Miyagikyo is one of the two main distilleries owned by Nikka Whisky, one of Japan's most prestigious whisky producers. Located in the Miyagi Prefecture, the distillery was established in 1969 by Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka and a pioneer of Japanese whisky. The location was chosen for its clean air, high humidity, and abundant supply of fresh spring water, all crucial factors for producing high-quality whisky.
Miyagikyo whiskies are known for their elegant and fruity profiles, often with notes of apple, pear, and citrus, complemented by subtle spices and a touch of smokiness. The distillery employs pot stills with a shape that encourages lighter and more delicate spirits, in contrast to Nikka's other main distillery, Yoichi, which produces a heavier, peatier style. Miyagikyo offers a range of single malts, as well as contributing to Nikka's acclaimed blended whiskies.
