Marzen
Märzen is a traditional German beer style that originated in Bavaria and is closely associated with the Oktoberfest celebration. The name "Märzen" comes from the German word for March, as this beer was historically brewed in March and stored in cool cellars to be consumed throughout the summer and during Oktoberfest in the fall.
Märzen beers are typically characterized by their rich malt profile, with flavors of toasted bread, caramel, and a slight nuttiness. They are medium to full-bodied, with a smooth, clean finish, and a moderate alcohol content, usually ranging from 5.8% to 6.3% ABV. The beer has a deep amber to copper color, which reflects the use of Vienna and Munich malts.
Traditionally, Märzen was brewed in the spring when brewing conditions were ideal, and it was stored ("lagered") in caves or cellars during the warm summer months. By the time Oktoberfest arrived, the Märzen would be perfectly aged, making it the beer of choice for the festival.
Today, Märzen remains a popular beer style, especially during the fall months, and it continues to be brewed and enjoyed around the world, both as a nod to its historical roots and for its rich, satisfying flavor.
