Maraschino
Maraschino is a traditional cherry liqueur with origins in Croatia, specifically the city of Zadar, where it has been produced since the 16th century. It is made from Marasca cherries, a small, sour variety native to the Dalmatian coast. The liqueur is crafted using the fruit's flesh, pits, and leaves, which are distilled together, resulting in a clear spirit with a distinctively dry, slightly nutty flavor profile, attributed to the crushed cherry pits.
Maraschino liqueur is known for its delicate balance of sweet and bitter notes, with hints of cherry, almond, and subtle herbal undertones. Unlike many other fruit liqueurs, it is not overly sweet, making it a versatile ingredient in cocktails. Classic drinks like the Last Word, Aviation, and Hemingway Daiquiri feature Maraschino, where it adds depth and complexity without overpowering other ingredients.
The liqueur is typically bottled at around 24-32% ABV and is often enjoyed as an aperitif or digestif, sipped neat or over ice. Its unique taste and historical significance have made Maraschino a staple in both traditional and modern mixology.
