Curacao
Curaçao is a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit, which is grown on the island of Curaçao in the Caribbean. Originally developed by Spanish settlers, who brought Valencia oranges to the island, the fruit failed to thrive in the arid climate, resulting in the bitter Laraha variety. The peel of this fruit, however, was found to contain aromatic oils perfect for liqueur production.
Curaçao is often associated with its vibrant blue color, although it can also be clear or other shades. The blue version, known as Blue Curaçao, is popular in tropical cocktails for its striking appearance. The flavor profile of Curaçao is sweet, slightly bitter, and aromatic, making it a versatile ingredient in many classic and modern cocktails, such as the Blue Lagoon and Mai Tai. The liqueur's popularity spans centuries, and it remains a staple in bars and home bars alike.
