Corte Vetusto
Corte Vetusto is a boutique mezcal brand that celebrates the traditional artistry and craftsmanship of mezcal production in Oaxaca, Mexico. Known for producing small-batch, artisanal mezcal, Corte Vetusto stands out for its dedication to preserving the ancestral techniques of mezcal distillation, while delivering a complex and refined drinking experience. The name Corte Vetusto translates to "ancient cut," reflecting the brand's deep respect for time-honored methods that have been passed down through generations.
The mezcal is crafted using 100% hand-harvested agave, primarily Espadín and wild Tobalá varieties, which are cooked in underground stone pits with wood and volcanic rock, giving it a signature smoky profile. The roasted agave is then crushed using a traditional tahona (stone wheel) and fermented naturally before being distilled in small copper stills by skilled mezcaleros. This slow, labor-intensive process yields a mezcal that captures the essence of the agave and the terroir of the Oaxaca region.
Corte Vetusto’s range of mezcals includes expressions like Espadín and Tobalá, each offering distinct flavor profiles. The Espadín mezcal showcases notes of earthy smoke, citrus, and pepper, balanced by a touch of sweetness from the agave. The Tobalá, made from the wild and rare agave variety, is more complex and rich, with layers of tropical fruit, floral notes, and deeper smokiness. Corte Vetusto mezcal is designed to be sipped and savored, offering a luxurious and authentic taste of Mexico’s rich mezcal tradition, making it a favorite among mezcal connoisseurs.
