Barbera
Barbera is a popular Italian red grape variety, primarily grown in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. Known for producing vibrant, food-friendly wines, Barbera is celebrated for its high acidity, low tannins, and rich flavors of dark fruits such as cherry, plum, and blackberry. Wines made from Barbera tend to have a medium to full body, with a refreshing and bright profile that makes them versatile for pairing with a wide range of foods.
The most famous expressions of Barbera come from two appellations: Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba. While both regions produce exceptional Barbera wines, Barbera d'Asti is often lighter and more acidic, whereas Barbera d'Alba can be fuller-bodied with deeper flavors. Barbera wines are approachable and enjoyable in their youth, yet some can benefit from aging, developing more complex notes of earth, spice, and leather over time. Its balanced profile of fruitiness and structure makes Barbera a favorite among Italian wine lovers.
