WhistlePig, Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is it called WhistlePig?

The name comes from a chance encounter founder Raj Bhakta had in Colorado, where a Frenchman called a groundhog a "whistle pig." The quirky term stuck and now it's one of the most recognizable names in American whiskey.

2. What makes WhistlePig special?

Three things: extended aging (10, 12, and 15-year expressions), innovative cask finishing (wine barrels, Vermont estate oak, double-headed toasting), and an uncompromising Vermont farm-to-bottle philosophy. Very few distilleries operate at this level of craft across their entire lineup.

3. What does WhistlePig taste like?

The 10 Year Rye leads with allspice, orange peel, and caramel, sweet and spicy in equal measure with a long butterscotch finish. The 12 Year Old World adds dark fruit and baking spice from the wine cask finish. The 15 Year is the most refined, leather, caramel, deep oak, and an elegant finish that goes on forever.

4. Is WhistlePig a good gift?

One of the best. The 10 Year is a crowd-pleaser at a reasonable price point. The 12 or 15 Year makes a genuinely impressive luxury gift. The Boss Hog is for when you really want to make someone's jaw drop. See all WhistlePig bottles →

5. Where can I buy WhistlePig online?

6. Which WhistlePig should a beginner start with?

Start with the 10 Year Rye it's the bottle that defines the brand. If you want to ease in at a lower price, the PiggyBack Bourbon is a great starting point too.
