Absinthe

24 items in this collection.

Absinthe is a highly alcoholic, anise-flavored spirit known for its association with 19th and early 20th-century Bohemian culture and art. Originating in Switzerland, it gained popularity in France among artists and writers such as Vincent van Gogh and Oscar Wilde.

Made from botanicals like grand wormwood, green anise, and sweet fennel, absinthe has a distinct licorice-like flavor and a characteristic green hue. It is traditionally served by dripping ice-cold water over a sugar cube placed on a slotted spoon above a glass of absinthe, a process called "louching," which turns the drink cloudy.

Absinthe faced controversy and bans due to concerns over its alleged hallucinogenic properties, attributed to thujone in wormwood. Modern research indicates thujone levels in traditional absinthe were not significantly higher than in other alcoholic beverages. Despite this, absinthe has seen a revival, with bans lifted in many countries, allowing for its production and sale once more.

Today, absinthe continues to captivate with its complex flavors and historical allure, serving as a symbol of artistic freedom and cultural fascination.
